USCCB Urges Congress to Defund Planned Parenthood and Other Abortion Providers

April 16, 2025

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is asking Catholics to contact their Members of Congress and urge them to cut off Planned Parenthood and other big abortion businesses from taxpayer dollars.

As Congress considers major budgetary questions in this year’s reconciliation process that will affect the poor and vulnerable, it should protect some of the most vulnerable of all—preborn children and their mothers. One important way to do this is by cutting off the big abortion industry from taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars. Even though critical policies like the Hyde Amendment help, Planned Parenthood still manages to take in almost $700 million per year in taxpayer funding while increasing its number of abortions and decreasing many of its other services over the last several years.

Planned Parenthood is responsible for about 40% of abortions in the U.S.—almost 400,000 per year. In addition, Planned Parenthood is a leading provider of “gender transition” hormone treatments, including to minors. While the Trump Administration recently moved to withhold some funding, more remains.

Most members of Congress will be in their home states during the Easter and Passover recess, and so it’s a great time to reach out to—or even visit—their local offices and let them know that taxpayer funding of the big abortion industry is unacceptable. Mothers and babies need real care from life-loving providers, not Planned Parenthood.

For more, read a recent letter to Congress from Bishop Thomas, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Bishop Barron, chairman of the Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life & Youth.
